Actually, although you're correct that the English language is a great thing, you've incorrectly used the term "shit." You were trying to imply displeasure with the product, in which case you should have said simply that it "was shit." Adding the modifer "the," as in "the shit," changes the meaning from negative to positive, thus undercutting the subtle nuance of your shit joke.
